I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang
Directed by Mervyn LeRoy
Starring Paul Muni, Glenda Farrell, Helen Vinson
This film has good advice to give
As it chronicles the adventures the true fugitive.
Paul Muni plays a man down on his luck
Who commits a crime and gets locked up,
But they don’t keep him behind bars in the day,
Because they make him work to make back what they pay
For his food and housing and security,
And this is not Mr. Muni’s cup of tea.
For starters he works long hours in the Sun
On a Georgian chain gang at the point of a gun.
The State thought Society would be done a favor
By subjecting the convicted to heavy labor.
And thus Mr. Muni spends his days
Doing the work of an unpaid slave,
And it bothers him all he can take,
And he sees his chance and makes his escape.
He escapes to the north and starts a new life,
With a job and a dwelling and someday a wife,
But he has one thing nagging him from his past
So he calls up a lawyer and calls him up fast,
Saying he wanted to make but deal with Georgia
So he wouldn’t have to keep looking over his shoulder.
The southern State has a suggestion:
She could come back down and finish his sentence.
Paul Muni agrees and turns himself in,
Only to discover their deception.
So he escapes again for good this time.
This film was based on a story that’s true,
And I’m giving it a three plus two.
