Princess Leia hides out on the icy planet Hoth.

The Empire Strikes Back
Is regarded to this day
As being one of the greatest
Sequels ever made.

Even better than that,
When compared to the first,
It’s said to far outshine Star Wars
In this universe.

When Star Wars came out
It was described at the time
As one of the greatest movies
Of all time.

If this one is better,
Then it just topped
An enormous juggernaut
That couldn’t be stopped.

In fact, the momentum of Star Wars
Continues unimpeded
To the year 2020,
And it’s bound to exceed it.

So…is Empire better?
How can we tell?
Should we be comparing
Jedi as well?

Well, for starters, the story
Is pretty darned good.
It’s a continuation,
And it flows like it should.

It goes off in directions
We wouldn’t expect
While remaining loyal
To its subject.

We meet Yoda, a Jedi master.

It also leaves us hanging
From the very last scene
Well making us ask ourselves
Just what we’ve seen.

We see characters
Change and evolve.
Some become powerful,
While some just dissolve.

Near the end,
When there is danger in the air,
It matters to us.
They made us care.

The direction this time around
Was not from George Lucas.
It was from Irvin Kershner,
And produced by George Lucas.

We hear a piece of music
Right near the start
That came to be known
As the Imperial March.

That piece alone
Improves this movie a bit
From the first Star Wars movie,
Which certainly lacked it.

I think it’s the second most
Recognized score
In the entirety
Of Star Wars lore,

Luke Skywalker faces off against Darth Vader.

The most recognized
Being, of course,
The main Star Wars theme,
Which is par for the course.

Whether Empire’s better or not,
It’s better than great,
And has easily earned
A fourteen minus eight.
